How to Use the Pipe Volume Calculator
Using the calculator takes three inputs.
Material – Copper, PVC, PEX, or steel. This is not cosmetic: it decides the wall thickness, and therefore how much of the pipe is actually open.
Nominal size – The size printed on the pipe, from 1/2 inch up to 6 inch. Nominal size is a trade label rather than a measurement, so the calculator looks up the real inside diameter for the material and schedule you picked: a 1-inch copper line is 1.025 inches inside, a 1-inch PEX line only 0.862. Feeding a nominal size straight into the formula overstates PEX by nearly 40%.
Run length – The total length of that run, in feet.
From there the calculator applies the standard cylinder volume formula:
Volume = π × Radius² × Length
The radius is half the inside diameter, so the calculator halves the looked-up diameter, squares it, and multiplies through by the length. The result comes back in cubic feet, gallons, and liters at once, with no manual conversion.
Pipe Volume Calculation Example
A plumbing contractor is cutting into a 100-foot section of 4-inch PVC water main to replace a corroded stretch. Before opening it, the crew needs to know how much water is going to come out — for containment, for disposal, and to know how long the drain-down actually takes.
Step 1: Look up the inside diameter. A 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe measures 3.998 inches inside.
Step 2: Convert the diameter to a radius. 3.998 ÷ 2 = 1.999 inches
Step 3: Apply the cylinder volume formula. π × 1.999² × 1,200 inches of run = 15,064 cubic inches
Step 4: Convert into working units. 15,064 cubic inches is 8.72 cubic feet, 65.2 gallons, or 247 liters.
Applying it to the job. Knowing the line holds about 65 gallons settles four things before anyone makes the cut:
- Containment: the crew needs a tank, drain pan, or wet vac rated for at least 65 gallons — not a 5-gallon bucket emptied thirteen times mid-job.
- Drain time: opening a valve and pulling the section down with a sump pump rated at 20 gallons per minute takes roughly 3.3 minutes. That is what sizes the repair window and tells you how long to keep the area clear.
- Disposal: 65 gallons off a treated municipal main may have to go to a storm drain or sanitary sewer per local code rather than onto the ground.
- Refill: once the repair is done, the same 65 gallons goes back in before the line is pressure-tested and returned to service.
The same calculation sizes chemical treatment doses — knowing the exact volume of water in a line tells you exactly how much to add per gallon — and estimates drain-down volume before winterizing an irrigation main.

Frequently Asked Questions
What measurements are needed to calculate pipe volume?
The inside diameter and the length of the run. This calculator gets the inside diameter for you from the material and nominal size, so all you need on site is what the pipe is and how long the run is.
Why is the inside diameter used instead of the outside diameter?
Only the inside diameter represents the space available for fluid. Using the outside diameter ignores the pipe wall, which overstates the volume — badly on thick-walled materials like PEX.
Can the calculator convert between gallons and liters?
Yes. Every result comes back in cubic feet, gallons, and liters together, so you can work in whichever unit the job, the pump curve, or the code official wants.
Why doesn't the size list change to match the material?
It does. PEX tubing isn't manufactured above 3 inches, so those sizes drop off the list once you select it. Copper, PVC, and steel all run up to 6 inches.
Is the Pipe Volume Calculator accurate?
Yes, given accurate inputs. It uses the standard cylinder volume formula against published inside diameters — copper Type L, PVC and steel Schedule 40, PEX SDR9 — which is exact for straight, cylindrical pipe. For complex systems with fittings, valves, or changing diameters, run each straight section separately and add them up. Fittings hold a small amount of extra volume this doesn't count.
