An undersized system struggles to hold temperature and raises food-safety risk; an oversized one short-cycles, wastes energy, and shortens the compressor's life.
How to Use the Refrigeration BTU Calculator
The calculator builds the load from several operating conditions.
Box dimensions (length, width, height) set the volume and the surface area that heat leaks through.
Insulation thickness controls transmission load — thicker insulation cuts the heat gain through the walls, ceiling, and floor. Roughly doubling the thickness halves that gain.
Interior target and ambient temperatures set the difference the system works against. The bigger the gap, the harder it works.
Product load accounts for warm stock coming in and respiring — light for a lightly stocked box, heavy for constant restocking of warm product.
Daily door openings add infiltration: every opening lets warm, humid air in that has to be pulled back down.
Defrost time adds a safety margin on top for the heat the defrost cycle itself puts in.
The result is the total refrigeration load in BTU per hour, which tells you the condensing-unit capacity to select.
